Mahale Mountains, Tanzania

Sokwe

Forest and lake

Mountains of forest,
above the oldest lake.

Mahale is the most difficult place we send people, and one of the few that travellers describe afterwards in a lowered voice. Forested mountains falling straight into Lake Tanganyika, and chimpanzees living wild within them.

Why it is different

There are no roads.

Mahale has no road access and no vehicles. You arrive by light aircraft and then by boat along the lake shore, and once there you move on foot. That inaccessibility is precisely what has preserved it.

The setting is genuinely unusual in Africa: white sand beaches on a lake so deep and clear it feels oceanic, with forested peaks rising directly behind them.

The chimpanzees

A privilege, not a guarantee.

The Mahale chimpanzee communities have been studied for decades and are habituated to human presence. Trekking to find them can take an hour or five, uphill, in heat and humidity, and sightings are likely but never certain.

When it happens, it is not a viewing so much as an encounter. Time with them is deliberately limited, and the rules are strict, because these are wild animals susceptible to human disease. We regard those limits as a feature, not an inconvenience.

Honest about the journey

It asks something of you.

Mahale requires time, money and a reasonable level of fitness. It does not slot conveniently into a two-week first visit alongside the Serengeti.

For travellers who want one extraordinary thing rather than several convenient ones, it may be the single most memorable place in Tanzania. We will tell you frankly whether your journey has room for it.

Questions we are asked

How do you get to Mahale?

By light aircraft to an airstrip near the lake, then by boat along the shore. There is no road access and no vehicles in the park.

Are chimpanzee sightings guaranteed at Mahale?

No. The communities are habituated and sightings are likely, but they are wild animals in mountainous forest. Treks can be short or long, and occasionally unsuccessful.
