The wilder south
Ruaha is among the largest national parks in Africa and receives a fraction of the northern circuit’s visitors. For travellers who want space rather than checklists, it is the most honest answer to what they are actually asking for.
The scale, and the emptiness
Ruaha covers over twenty thousand square kilometres. On many days you will drive for hours and see no other vehicle. The trade is real: fewer roads, longer distances, and a wilder, less managed experience. For some travellers that is a compromise. For others it is the entire point.
The Great Ruaha river runs through it, and in the dry season the sand rivers and remaining pools concentrate wildlife in a way that rewards patience enormously.
What it holds
Ruaha sits at a transition zone between eastern and southern African ecosystems, which gives it an unusual mix — greater and lesser kudu, sable and roan, alongside very large elephant populations and some of the most substantial lion prides in East Africa.
It is also serious wild dog country, which alone justifies the journey for a certain kind of traveller.
Honest about the effort
Ruaha requires a flight or a long drive, and it does not combine neatly with the northern circuit in a short trip. If you have eight days and want the Serengeti and the crater, Ruaha is probably not your journey.
If you have twelve days and you would rather be alone with it, we will suggest Ruaha before almost anywhere. We will also tell you honestly when your dates or timeframe do not suit it.
Is Ruaha better than the Serengeti?
Different, not better. The Serengeti offers the migration and unmatched density; Ruaha offers space, solitude and an unusual mix of species. Travellers who prize quiet over spectacle often prefer Ruaha.
How do you get to Ruaha?
Usually by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam or Arusha, or a long drive from Iringa. It is not a convenient add-on to a short northern itinerary, and we will say so rather than squeeze it in.
