Beneath the escarpment
Lake Manyara is often given an afternoon on the way to somewhere grander. That is a mistake made by itineraries, not by travellers — because within a few kilometres it moves through groundwater forest, open floodplain, soda lake and the wall of the Rift Valley.
The compression
Manyara is narrow, pressed between the Rift escarpment and the lake itself, and that compression is the point. You begin in dense groundwater forest fed by springs, emerge into open woodland, cross floodplain, and arrive at a soda lake that can hold thousands of flamingo.
Few places in Tanzania change character so quickly. For anyone interested in how a landscape actually works — water, geology, vegetation — it is one of the most instructive hours in the country.
Birds, and the honest truth about lions
Manyara is one of Tanzania’s great birding parks, with well over four hundred recorded species. In the right season the lake edge is extraordinary.
It is also famous for tree-climbing lions, and here we will be straight with you: they exist, and they are not reliable. Lions climb trees in several parks and they do it when it suits them. If someone promises you tree lions, they are promising weather.
How we use it
Manyara sits early on the northern route, and we often use it as the first day of a journey — a gentle, layered introduction before the scale of the Serengeti. It resets the eye.
It also holds one of the better canopy walkways in the country and some genuinely good night driving. Given a full day rather than an afternoon, it earns its place completely.
Is Lake Manyara worth visiting?
Yes, particularly for birding and for the sheer variety of landscape in a small area. It is usually given an afternoon; a full day serves it far better.
Will I see tree-climbing lions at Manyara?
Possibly, but never reliably. Lions climb trees here when it suits them, as they do elsewhere. Any operator promising them is promising something they cannot control.
