The coast
Most journeys end here, and there is a reason. After days of early mornings and long light, the coast asks nothing of you. But Zanzibar is a place with its own history, not merely a beach at the end of a safari.
More than a beach
Zanzibar sat at the centre of Indian Ocean trade for centuries — Persian, Omani, Indian and African influences layered into its architecture, language and food. Treating it purely as a beach is like treating Venice as a boat ride.
Stone Town, the spice farms, the fishing villages and the reef each hold something entirely separate from the mainland experience, and we will usually suggest at least one day that is not spent horizontal.
Choosing where
The east coast has the finest sand and the most dramatic tides. The north stays swimmable throughout the tidal cycle and is busier. The south and west are quieter, better for sunsets, less good for swimming.
This is a practical matter that materially affects a stay, and it is regularly glossed over. We will ask what you actually want from the days — swimming, quiet, diving, or somewhere to do nothing — and place you accordingly.
When to go
The long rains, roughly April into May, are genuinely wet here and many properties close. December to February is hot and clear. June to October is dry and pleasant, coinciding neatly with the mainland dry season.
We plan the coast around the safari, not the other way round — but we will tell you if your dates make the island a poor ending and suggest an alternative.
How many days should I spend in Zanzibar after a safari?
Three to four nights suits most travellers. Fewer feels rushed after an early-morning safari rhythm; more suits those who genuinely want to stop.

It depends on what you want. The east has the best sand but dramatic tides; the north stays swimmable throughout; the south and west are quieter. We ask what you want from the days before suggesting where to stay.
