Coral stone and carved doors
Stone Town is the oldest part of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage site — a dense maze of coral-stone buildings, carved doors and narrow lanes that record every culture that ever traded here.
What it is
Stone Town is not preserved as a museum; it is lived in. Swahili, Omani, Persian, Indian and European influences sit on top of one another in the same street, sometimes the same building. The famous carved doors alone tell you who built each house and what they believed.
It is best understood on foot, slowly, preferably with someone who grew up in it. A guided walk here is not a formality — without one, most visitors see a pretty maze and miss the history entirely.
The harder history
Stone Town was also a centre of the East African slave trade, and the former slave market and its memorial are part of any honest visit. We do not treat this as an optional or uncomfortable extra.
Travellers who engage with it invariably say it was among the most affecting parts of their journey. We will make space for it, and we will not narrate it for you — the people who guide there do it far better than we could.
The pleasures
The night market at Forodhani, the rooftops at sunset, a dhow going out with the tide, coffee at a street corner where three languages are being spoken at once. Stone Town rewards unstructured hours as much as guided ones.
We usually suggest a night or two here before the beach, rather than a rushed transfer through it.

We think so. A night or two before the beaches gives the place its proper weight, rather than passing through on a transfer.
Do I need a guide in Stone Town?
You do not need one to enjoy it, but you need one to understand it. The architecture, doors and history are largely invisible without someone who knows them.
