Formerly part of the Selous, Nyerere is among the largest protected areas in Africa — and the only major Tanzanian park where the defining experience happens on water.
What makes it singular
The Rufiji river and its network of lakes and channels run through Nyerere, and boat safaris here are not a novelty add-on — they are the best way to see the place. Approaching elephant, hippo and enormous crocodile from the water changes the register entirely: quieter, lower, closer.
Walking safaris are also well established here, which is uncommon in Tanzania’s northern parks. Between boat, foot and vehicle, Nyerere offers more ways of moving through wild country than almost anywhere else.
The character
This is not open plain. Nyerere is riverine forest, palm-lined channels, borassus stands and miombo woodland — a softer, greener, more intricate landscape than the northern circuit.
Wildlife densities are lower than the crater or the dry-season Serengeti, and that is worth saying plainly. What you gain is intimacy and solitude.
Who it suits
We often suggest Nyerere to travellers returning to Tanzania, or to first-timers who have told us clearly that they would rather see less and feel more.
It combines naturally with Ruaha for a southern journey, or with Zanzibar, since both are reached easily from Dar es Salaam.
What is Nyerere National Park?
It is the northern section of the former Selous Game Reserve, redesignated as a national park. It is one of the largest protected areas in Africa and is best known for boat safaris on the Rufiji river.
Is Nyerere good for a first safari?
It can be, for travellers who value quiet and variety of activity over sheer density of animals. For a first-time visitor whose priority is the migration or the Big Five in a short window, the northern circuit is usually the better answer.
